Blackjack is one of the oldest card games, dating way back to the 1400’s, which are still played today. As with almost all modern card games, Blackjack origins from a variety of other card games.
Depending on whom you’ll ask the answers of what game it’s an off-spring from will vary. There were similar games in the 1400’s and 1500’s but no one is really sure what game it was that inspired Blackjack.
The Italians claim that Baccarat is the origin for the game of Blackjack. Even though Baccarat still is a popular game today it is nowhere near as popular as it once used to be. The French on the other hand says that Quinze is the game that led to the “invention” of Blackjack. However, Quinze didn’t see the day of light until in the 1700’s which pretty much rules this theory out. The Spanish also has theory – namely that Thirty-One, dating back to 1570, is the game that inspired Blackjack. All of the mentioned games have the objective of reaching a certain number, however not 21 as in Blackjack.
There is only one game where the purpose was to reach 21 and it is Vingt-Un (which means 21 in French). The game was popular in France in the 1700’s and it crossed the ocean to America sometime during the 1800’s. The rules of Vingt-Un were more closely related to the rules of Baccarat but it could have come from a mix of many different rules. It all depends on whom you’ll ask.
It was not until 1910 that the earliest form of the modern style of Blackjack was created in the US. Around 1920 Blackjack began to grow in popularity in the then popular casinos and by 1940 it was the more popular than Roulette. Blackjack was the number one casino game for more than 50 years, until the recent poker boom, which is a record in the history of Blackjack.
